Anderson's Cannon and Wingate's Knowles Earn South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its Varsity Gems Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week for games played in the eighth week of the 2023 season. Anderson's Alicia Cannon was named the offensive player of the week and Wingate's Leah Knowles was named the defensive player of the week.
Cannon, a freshman from Tarzana, Calif., led all scorers with eight goals and three assists in Anderson's 21-5 victory over Catawba on Saturday afternoon. She had two ground balls, eleven draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Cannon currently leads the NCAA DII in draw controls per game (9.55) and is second in the SAC in goals (44) and points (58).
Knowles, a senior from Hickory, N.C., had a big week for No. 10 Wingate, notching five caused turnovers, three ground balls and 12 draw controls while adding six goals and four assists. The All-American had three caused turnovers and two ground balls in Wednesday's win against Newberry, adding four goals, four assists, and six draw controls. Knowles notched two more caused turnovers in the Mars Hill win on Saturday, adding a ground ball, six draw controls, and two goals.
