Wingate & Queens Women's Tennis Suffer Setbacks in NCAA Regional Quarterfinals

Savannah, Ga.----The fifth-seeded and 27th-ranked Flagler College Saints won two of three doubles matches Sunday afternoon, then prevailed in the first three singles matches to register a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded and 35th-ranked Wingate University in the NCAA Southeast regional women's tennis action. The Saints improve to 14-10 overall, while Wingate sees its 14-match winning streak come to an end, finishing the season at 16-5 overall. The 'Dogs went 16-2 against Division II opponents in 2015.
Flagler won two of the three doubles matches Sunday afternoon. Wingate's number two doubles team of freshmanMaria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) and Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) picked up an 8-2 victory. Wingate's number one doubles team of sophomore Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) and senior Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) dropped a tough 8-6 match.
The Saints picked up victories at two, three and four singles to clinch the match. Ternera dropped a first-set tiebreaker at number one singles and was leading 5-3 in the second set when the match was clinched. Sophomore Layla Tanik(Raleigh, N.C.) dropped a tough match at four singles, falling 6-4 and 7-5.
It was another successful season for the Bulldogs. Wingate went 11-0 in the SAC, while going on capture the SAC Tournament title. The 'Dogs were making their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and SAC-best 13th all-time. Wingate has won four of the last five SAC Tournament championships. The Bulldogs have also won five consecutive regular season titles, giving Wingate nine SAC championships in the last five seasons.
Royals Halted at NCAAs by Columbus State | Box Score
Columbus, Ga.– The No. 36-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team's run came to an end on Monday, May 04, 2015, after the Royals faced the No. 8th-ranked Columbus State in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament. The Cougars swept the doubles courts before adding two singles spots to clinch the match and improve to a 21-3 record. The Royals would conclude their season with a 16-4 overall record.
The day started with Columbus State securing the first three points of the day with wins in the doubles matchups. The No.2 doubles pair of Marta Gonzalez and Caroline Nielsen did see their way to a 3-3 tie but the Cougars rallied to take hold of the match. The other two courts resulted with Columbus State prevailing with 8-0 victories.
The Royals looked to shake off the doubles sets but Columbus State held their ground. Jaclyn Rock would see a 4-2 lead in a tiebreaker on Court 5 when the match was clinched.
The loss ends a successful season for the Royals who found their way back into the NCAA Regional play for the first time in five years. The team held a national ranking all spring semester heading into today's match with a 36th overall ranking. The Royals helped to garner their position in the tournament claiming the runner-up spot in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament and taking a 7-3 conference record.
