The South Atlantic Conference Announces 2021 Women's Tennis Annual Award Winners
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Queens University of Charlotte's Yana Fleyer was voted the 2021 South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year, while Wingate University's Elena Gunfaus was voted the Conference's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Wingate's head coach Michael Cabana was named the Coach of the Year, the SAC office announced today.
Fleyer, a senior from Minsk, Belarus, led the Royals to a 10-3 overall record, going 9-1 in conference play. Fleyer finished the regular season ranked No. 27 nationally in singles play with an 11-1 overall record and a 9-1 SAC record at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Fleyer and partner Sasha Davidzenka are ranked No. 7 nationally with a perfect 11-0 overall record, going 10-0 in conference play at No. 1 singles.
Gunfaus, a freshman from Spain, was perfect on the year at No. 3 singles, going 12-0 overall and 9-0 in conference play. She lost just two sets all season in singles. In doubles, Gunfaus posted a 9-4 overall doubles mark this season playing No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Cabana guided the Bulldogs to their ninth South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship in the last 10 years with an 11-0 record in SAC play. Overall, the Bulldogs finished the 2021 campaign with a 13-1 record. Wingate is currently ranked No. 15 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II Women's Tennis National Ranking.
Joining Fleyer and Gunfaus on the All-SAC first team singles squad were Elena Bompieri of Wingate, Ana Carla Resende from Carson-Newman, Annie McCullough from Tusculum, and Lenoir-Rhyne's Gemma Southwick.
The All-SAC first team doubles honorees were the Fleyer and Davidzenka from Queens, Annie and Caitlin McCullough from Tusculum, and Newberry's Elisa Aguirre and Judit Gonzalez Agud.
