Carson-Newman's Awad Takes Home Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year Accolades
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Carson-Newman's Hala Awad has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, leadership, and service among the league's student-athletes.
A senior from Cairo, Egypt, Awad has excelled both on the court and in the classroom throughout her collegiate career. She owns a 3.88 GPA while majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics at Carson-Newman. Academically, Awad has earned CSC Academic All-District honors, ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition, NSIC All-Academic Team honors, Carson-Newman Eagle Scholar accolades, and multiple selections to the Carson-Newman President's List.
On the court, Awad has put together one of the top seasons in Carson-Newman women's tennis history. Serving as the Eagles' regular No. 1 singles player this season, she posted a 12-1 overall singles record and finished undefeated in South Atlantic Conference play with an 8-0 mark. Her victories included wins over nationally-ranked opponents from No. 24 Wingate, No. 22 Lenoir-Rhyne, No. 23 Newberry, and No. 34 Anderson. Awad is currently ranked No. 49 nationally in NCAA Division II and became the first Eagle to earn First-Team All-SAC Singles honors since 2022.
During her two seasons at Carson-Newman, Awad compiled a 21-4 singles record and produced the highest career singles winning percentage in program history at 84 percent. Prior to arriving at Carson-Newman, she starred at the University of Mary, where she earned All-NSIC Second Team Singles honors as a freshman before collecting All-NSIC First Team Singles accolades as a sophomore.
Awad's freshman campaign included a 15-1 singles record with an undefeated 11-0 conference mark, suffering her lone loss against an NCAA Division I opponent. She was also named UMary Female Rookie of the Year following the season.
