Lenoir-Rhyne Repeats As Women’s Cross Country Champions
NEWTON, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's cross country team finished first at the 2009 Food Lion SAC Championship to repeat as winners Saturday morning at Southside Park in Newton, N.C.
Sophomore Kate Griewisch finished first overall to lead the Bears, who had three of the top six runners in the race. Griewisch ran an 18:27 on the 5K course and won by one minute and 48 seconds over second-place finisher Sofia Lopez Mimendi from Lincoln Memorial University.
Joining Griewisch and Mimendi on the All-South Atlantic Conference First Team were Carson-Newman College's Meredith Nix, Catawba College's Maleah Cole, Lenoir-Rhyne's Tiffany Payne and Alyssa Lowe and Carson-Newman's Brooke Earhart.
Nix, who finished third overall, was named the Women's Freshman Runner of the Year.
The All-SAC Second Team included Wingate University's Brittany Vish and Alicia Harbold, Lenoir-Rhyne's Liz Chaffee, Carson-Newman's Melissa Ford and Catelyn Dake, Lincoln Memorial's Fiona Reinecke and Carson-Newman's Cara Hawkins.
Joining Nix on the 2009 South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman Team honors were, Earhart, Chaffee, Lincoln Memorial's Ashley Robbins and Wingate's Melanie Wollenberg.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Jason Stewart was named South Atlantic Conference Coach Of The Year for the second year in a row while Griewisch was the 2009 South Atlantic Conference Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Of The Year.
