Lenoir-Rhyne’s Griewisch Wins NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Championship
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne University's Kate Griewisch ran a 20:55 over 6K Saturday morning to win the 2010 NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Southeast Regional Championship at McAlpine Park. Griewisch, who finished 36 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, won the regional race for the second straight year.
The junior from Banner Elk, N.C., also qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship race, which will take place on Saturday, December 4, at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
Griewisch earned All-America honors in last year's national championship race after finishing 19th out of 184 runners.
The host Queens University Royals claimed their first-ever regional title, with King College, Columbus State and Augusta State posting second, third and fourth-place finishes, respectively. Queens and King advanced to the national championship.
Anderson University, which claimed the South Atlantic Conference title two weeks ago at Wingate, finished fifth, one spot ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne.
Lenoir-Rhyne finished sixth out of 28 squads.
Columbus State's Naomi Tanui and Barton's Ericka Skinner also qualified to nationals as individuals.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Amanda Barnes (Chelmsford, Mass.) was the Bears' second runner, finishing 40th overall with a time of 24:13.
The Anderson women's cross country team finished in fifth place
finish at the 2010 Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships
hosted by Queens University of Charlotte Friday at McAlpine Creek
Park.
Anderson junior All-American Whitney Bishoff (22:19.1) posted a ninth-place finish in the 6K event to lead the Trojan effort, while freshman Lydia Davis (23:51.3) finished 26th.
The Wingate women finished 11th in the team totals with 318 points.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman Keeley Wood, who finished 21st
overall in 23:27.7. Senior Alicia Harbold concluded her outstanding
Bulldog career by finishing 49th overall with a time of 24:29.8.
Freshman Brianna Stevens (71st overall, 25:09.9) and junior Lindsay
Lippencott (82nd overall, 25:24.7) were next across the line for
Wingate. Sophomore Melanie Wollenberg was fifth for the team and
97th overall in 25:52.7. Freshmen Macy Adkins (107th overall,
26:01.4) and Taylor Varnadoe (139th, 27:12) finished in the six and
seven positions for the 'Dogs.
The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles finished 15th in the meet. Sophomore Meredith Nix (Walhalla, S.C.) led the way for the Lady Eagles, finishing 62nd with a time of 24:47.8, while sophomore Brooke Earhart (Dickson, Tenn.) finished 64th with a time of 24:52.5.
The Mars Hill women's cross country team finished 17th. Cassie Adamson was the top finisher for the Lions. Adamson finished 28th overall. Her time in the race was 23:51.8.
The Catawba women were 21st. Freshman Peyton Thompson (Winston-Salem, NC/N. Davidson HS) led the Catawba women in the 6k. She ran a time of 24:45, equaling the fifth-best time in school history and finished 60th. Freshman Olivia Myers (Lexington, NC/W. Davidson HS) posted the eighth-best 6k time at 25:22 and was 80th.
The Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters turned in a 23rd place finish. Junior Amber Stoerp led the way for the Lady Railsplitters, finishing 72nd with a time of 25:12.9, while fellow junior Fiona Reinecke finished 87th with a time of 25:32.4. Casey Poore (26:49.8) finished 132nd, Caroline Chadwell (28:50.1) was 164th and Kelsy Clasby (29:33.1) finished 173rd.
