Wingate Claims NCAA Women’s Cross Country Regional Championship
Two weeks after winning the 2013 Food Lion SAC Women’s Cross Country Championship, Wingate captured NCAA Southeast Region title on Saturday, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championship later this month.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two weeks after winning the 2013 Food Lion SAC Women's Cross Country Championship, Wingate captured NCAA Southeast Region title on Saturday, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championship later this month.
Nationals will take place on Nov. 23 in Spokane, Wash., at the Plants Ferry Athletic Complex.
Wingate finished with a team score of 75 – 32 points ahead of second-place Flagler. Queens was the SAC's next-highest team finisher at No. 9, followed by No. 11 Mars Hill, No. 14 Anderson, No. 19 Lincoln Memorial, No. 20 Brevard, No. 26 Catawba, No. 28 Lenoir-Rhyne, No. 29 Tusculum, No. 30 Coker and No. 31 Carson-Newman.
The Bulldogs were led by SAC Freshman of the Year Brittany Tretbar, who finished with a time of 22:20.4 – good for fourth-place in the individual standings. Mars Hill's Jessica Viscussi finished just two-tenths of a second behind Tretbar in fifth place to earn an individual qualification for the national championship.
Queens' Andrea Guerra and Wingate's Keeley Wood – the SAC Runner of the Year – placed seventh and eighth, respectively, to round of the SAC's representation in the top 10.
An additional pair of Wingate runners – Brianna Stevens and Alyssa Johnson – made the top 20, finishing 14th and 15th, respectively.
